Sotiris Georgiou

Sotiris Georgiou was born in August 1978 in Athens, and brought up in the club and festival scene of the nineties which undoubtedly shaped his worldview and aesthetics in a significant way. He has loved sketching since childhood, so after finishing high school he enrolled at the Veloudakis School of Fashion.

Upon graduation, he worked for various companies while at the same time searching for his aesthetic identity, attempting his first, experimental designs. In the summer of 2004, he stumbled across a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt that would forever change the way he thinks: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Upon returning from a vacation in September, he launched his own atelier. He is just 26 years old. Tim Burton’s gothic heroines and the black tulips in a garden in Portugal become the inspiration behind Black Flower, his first complete women’s collection. Men’s and women’s lines follow, such as In the City and Distortion along with Raw Data, the inspiration for which comes to him after attending a Kraftwerk concert. 2014 sees the birth of his daughter and the city of Athens in utter chaos, embroiled in strikes and protests. He creates One Way or Another, an entire collection based on bias cuts, a way to express the beauty that can be found even when things go sideways. The success of his collections, which are now characterized by timeless simplicity, grows together with Sotiris Georgiou’s ever-expanding library, and his references are enriched by travel and culture. Inspiration comes from everywhere, transforming, through words, into images in his mind: The doric fluidity of sculptures, the subculture of the 70’s and 80’s, the punk anarchy of the artist Steven Parrino and the complex psyche of Jackson Pollock _who inspires the Perplexity collection and a garment that requires four hundred meters of thread_ the designer’s references are always applied to the here and now, passing through the filter of the minimalistic approach more often found in the Belgian and Japanese schools of design. Today, he enjoys greater freedom in the way he designs and approaches both the human body and the concept of color. His Prêt-à-Porter collections are now fluid, always created for assertive characters who think as they walk, citizens of the world who redefine their perspective every day. For him, every collection is a performance with the fabrics being the players: Silk for its freedom and the way it is shaped, wool for the generosity it gives to shapes, cotton for purity. For him, the inside of a garment is just as important, as he believes that a well-tailored piece is above and beyond what is seen. This is also the reason why he consciously chooses to create limited collections. His consistent dedication to quality and his ever-evolving talent have been widely recognized by the media (DAZED, YATZER, VOGUE, A SHADED VIEW OF FASHION BY DIANE PERNET), while the Benaki Museum showed one of his creations at the ENDYESTHE exhibition, in 2010. His designs have been hosted in boutiques in Tokyo, Berlin and London, while in August 2022 director Angela Ismailou walked on the red carpet of the Venice Film Festival wearing a black and white Sotiris Georgiou creation.
